I'm going to stitch on 34 count for the first time and I have come up against the ultimate question:
One strand or two?
Opinions, please!!!
Happy Stitches!

Definitely over 2! I stitch on 32ct often and I always do over 2. 34ct should be close to 18ct aida when stitching over 2.
Hope that helps :)

TWO strands! I used one, once and it was too sparse.
Two over two. Definitely.
It depends on the color of your fabric and the color of your floss, but probably two. However, if you're using a nice, fat silk, in a color that's not too dark, on a linen that's not bright white, one might do. Stitch a little test swatch and see what you like. =)
You should either use 2 strands over 2 threads OR (you do have options!) you could use one strand of premium silk. There is less knotting and smoother stitching. Many of us that stitch on the higher counts (36-45) swear by silk. Not all silk is expensive, but you would have to do a color conversion. Personally I use Hand Dyed Fibers (or HDF as some of us call it)and occassionally Carrie's Creations. HDF is very cost effective and a great product. (No I don't sell it, but I do use/buy it quite often.)
I say 1 strand, but it's all personal preference.
I usually tell my customers to try stitching with both 1 strand and 2 strands in the margin of your fabric and decide which you like best before you start stitching the piece.
Can't wait to see pics of what you decide. :)
two strands for me if it's cotton floss. One strand of silk but it may be a little sparse on darker colors. Silk is always tricky with counts in the 30's - you don't always get the coverage you want with 1 strand.
Sounds like you have gotten some good advice already.
For me I would usually use 2 strands of DMC floss over 2 threads of linen. I think this is the general rule with most stitchers. It truely is personal preferance.
I do like the look of 1 thread of floss over 2 linen. It gives it a more antique look to many designs.
Silk floss is pretty much one strand of floss over 2 threads.
When I am in question with a linen thread project, I just try a few stitches each way on the linen in some of the colors to see which I like best.
Usually the number of threads is a guide to the number in floss to get a filled in look. 28,30,32...2 flosses over 2 linen; 34,36,38...preference of how you want it to look; and 40 or 50 count...definately one thread of floss over 2 linen threads or if stitching over on linen thread...one thread of floss.
Hopes this helps, this is how I have learned it and the ladies in my guild stitch.
well i love to stitch with one strand..i like fine like.
good luck dear xx
Wonderful advice! I have learned just by reading all the comments. I haven't even tried 30 or 32 ct yet.
Jennifer,
I found an article that is on the basics of cross-stitch that was written for he Cross-stitch Christmas magazine back in 1997. I would be happy to email if you like. You can contact me back at mrebec4@hotmail.com30
For me, it depends on the fabric, type of fiber and the design. I sometimes make a few stitches on the edge of the fabric to see which I like better.
I enjoy working on 32 and 34 as well as 40 ct. I usually stitch 2 over 2.
Lookingforward to seeing what you are working on.
2 strands. When in doubt do some test stitches each way in the corner. Sometimes one strand is used for a lighter effect.
If you're stitching 1 over 1 then use 1 strand...if you're going to stitch 2 over 2 then use 2 strands :)

Try it and see, but I like silk with one strand over that count!
I usually don't start using just one strand until I get up to 36 count if I'm stitching with DMC. Silks are a different story. I agree with those who suggest trying a few stitches each way first.
I am stitching on 40 count right now using 2 strands of DMC over 2! I don't know what I was thinking!
